Inspiration from handbooks

For the curious herbalist, reading an herbal handbook is inspirational! A kind of miniature encyclopedic reference, a handbook offers features for personalized study, as our instructor-in-the-moment. Pocket-sized, ready-referenced, with instances of herbal fact in tabular format, handbooks are consulted not only for the health advice given but also the exposure to nature that we rarely get these days.  How long have herbal handbooks been around?  Which ones are excellent and easy to use?  And just what makes a publication a handbook?  These are the questions, Dear Reader, that have guided the selection of a number of herbal handbook re-reviews that will be posted here, for your enjoyment.
