Turmeric in Your Teacup

Turmeric Teas have taken the market lead for new offerings in herbal teas. Nationally available herbal tea brands have proprietary blends highlighting turmeric, a spice that occurs in Indian curries. Turmeric’s culinary property is to soften or make pliable, it’s a supporting spice in curry pastes against the tapestry of fire in chilies and garlic. Only a tiny amount would be used in comparison to other spices, otherwise it gives an overwhelmingly bitter or earthy taste.

Three herbal teas below are shown in order of my preference for the taste that each offers with the turmeric flavor.

Additional ingredients to turmeric for each tea varied; turmeric, ginger and licorice were common to each brand.

Personally, I prefer the taste of ginger and like to have the taste of licorice less noticeable overall. So I was quite impressed with the flavors of an herbal blend that incorporated lemongrass. The lemongrass pairs with licorice and gives it a more subtle taste. Another blend offers a hot gingery taste with galangal, a plant from the ginger family. My tasting and photography was done on Tuesday, October 11, 2016.

Cautionary Note: If you are taking blood-thinning medications, are pregnant, or experiencing ulcers or GERD, or kidney stones, please check with your health practitioner before taking turmeric as it could likely aggravate the conditions mentioned. If on blood-thinning medication or if pregnant, avoid the virulent hot taste of ginger.

Rishi Turmeric Ginger

Rishi Turmeric Ginger Organic Herbal Tea (see back of box for description of benefits including longevity and vitality)

Ingredients: Organic ginger root, organic turmeric root, organic licorice root, organic lemongrass, organic orange peel, organic lemon peel, essential orange and lemon oils.

Tasting Notes: This tea is festive! It has a sparkly-ginger-sweet taste—you really get the lemongrass as a sweet note, with licorice and ginger following after. Turmeric taste (earthy taste) is not prominent in this high quality tea’s melody of flavors. The combination of lemongrass and licorice solves the problem of too much licorice on your tongue. The tea taste and color gives the sense of a curated blend of herbs and spices, carefully orchestrated for a unique savory-sweet experience. The liquor is thick and has a good pumpkin-y color. Sediment in the bottom of cup. Tea bag left in for 15-20 mins developed the taste of turmeric a bit.

This was my favorite of the three teas, and I would drink it often accompanied by a non-sugar sweet or gluten-free pastry.

Teabag is a light mesh in triangular shape, contains chopped herbs.

Brew-time: 5-7 mins at 200 F

Pukka Three Ginger

Pukka Three Ginger : A warming swirl of organic ginger, galangal & golden turmeric

Tasting Notes: This tea has a brilliant, hot, spicy ginger taste: it’s made with galangal, ginger and turmeric where ginger root is prominent in quantity, galangal is next prominent and turmeric, a small percentage. Very well-balanced. A bit of licorice root and ginger essential oil flavor support the top notes in the blend. Highlights of taste are ginger and licorice, but underneath ginger is galangal, which is a very nice hot spice. I get the notion this liquor could be used in beverage recipes and blended smoothies as the spicy liquor.

This tea is really delightful when you’re looking for hot and spicy flavors. You really feel the warmth of the spices after drinking this tea.

Teabag is full of spice, ground.

It’s vetted in UK by Soil Association Organic, USDA Organic, and Kosher.

Brew time: “at least five minutes”.

Numi Turmeric Tea Three Roots

Numi Turmeric Tea Three Roots with Licorice, Ginger and Rose

Ingredients: Organic Turmeric, Organic Ginger, Organic Licorice and Organic Rose.

Tasting Notes: This tea has a very soft flavor, mostly of turmeric—similar to the spice you spoon into your cooking pot. The aroma is from the turmeric, earthy, but the taste has decidedly sweet notes. Tea bag is full of tiny granule-like pieces of these spices. Licorice taste is really prominent, to my palate, so if you absolutely love licorice then this is the blend for you.

Teabag contains chopped herbs.

Numi Turmeric Tea is certified USDA Organic.

Brew time: 8-10 minutes, suggested.

Herbs and Spices:

Turmeric, the common name for Curcuma longa, from the Ginger plant family, is used both medicinally and as a spice. The flesh of the root has a strikingly dark orange color that stains skin and cloth easily and historically was used to dye cotton fabric.

The root is widely applied in both Ayurvedic medicine and Chinese herbalism. The rhizome (root) is used to resolve arthritis, disease of the circulation and skin damage.

Healing properties of turmeric vary widely due to the amount of curcumin, a substance that is not easily absorbed by the body. Turmeric is also known for its role in Indian curries, along with ginger, chilies and other spices.
